Medano Creek in Early Spring

The high dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park are trapped in the corner formed by where the Sangre de Cristo and the San Juan Mountains meet.  The sand from the dry San Luis Valley blows into the mountains during the dry season, but in the spring Medano Creek flows out of the high mountains as the snow melts, returning the sand to the dunes.  I volunteered for two springs at the park, and really enjoyed painting the western mountains.
